Discovering the Thrill of Onbashira Festival!

The ancient traditions of Japan are alive and thriving, and I had the incredible opportunity to witness one of the most exhilarating celebrations – the Onbashira Festival!

Onbashira, which means “the sacred pillars,” is a centuries-old festival held in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan. The festival is celebrated every six years, and it’s all about the renewal of the Suwa Grand Shrine. Giant tree trunks are felled, decorated, and then transported down steep hills by brave participants.

The Heart-Pounding Experience

Imagine massive, ancient tree trunks sliding down a hill, people riding them, and spectators cheering on – it’s a breathtaking spectacle! The combination of tradition, teamwork, and the rush of adrenaline is simply incredible.

The Four Stages

The festival takes place over several months and consists of four stages: Yamadashi (tree felling), Satobiki (tree hauling), Kigen-sai (tree raising), and Rikkoshi-sai (tree placement). Each stage is a mesmerizing display of strength, skill, and devotion to tradition.

This incredible festival spans several months, and you can catch it on the following key dates in 2023:
