Discovering the Thrill of Onbashira Festival!

The ancient traditions of Japan are alive and thriving, and I had the incredible opportunity to witness one of the most exhilarating celebrations – the Onbashira Festival! ๐ŸŽ‰

Onbashira, which means “the sacred pillars,” is a centuries-old festival held in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan. The festival is celebrated every six years, and it’s all about the renewal of the Suwa Grand Shrine. Giant tree trunks are felled, decorated, and then transported down steep hills by brave participants.

๐ŸŒณ The Heart-Pounding Experience ๐ŸŒณ

Imagine massive, ancient tree trunks sliding down a hill, people riding them, and spectators cheering on – it’s a breathtaking spectacle! ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŽข The combination of tradition, teamwork, and the rush of adrenaline is simply incredible.

๐ŸŽ‰ The Four Stages ๐ŸŽ‰

The festival takes place over several months and consists of four stages: Yamadashi (tree felling), Satobiki (tree hauling), Kigen-sai (tree raising), and Rikkoshi-sai (tree placement). Each stage is a mesmerizing display of strength, skill, and devotion to tradition.

This incredible festival spans several months, and you can catch it on the following key dates in 2023:

1๏ธโƒฃ Yamadashi (Tree Felling): April 2nd and 3rd

2๏ธโƒฃ Satobiki (Tree Hauling): April 8th and 9th

3๏ธโƒฃ Kigen-sai (Tree Raising): April 12th and 13th

4๏ธโƒฃ Rikkoshi-sai (Tree Placement): April 16th

๐Ÿ“ Location ๐Ÿ“

The Onbashira Festival unfolds in the Suwa region of the Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The festival grounds are surrounded by stunning natural beauty, making it an even more enchanting experience.

๐ŸŽต The Cultural Extravaganza ๐ŸŽต

The festival is not just about physical challenges; it’s a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture, with traditional music, dance, and food. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich heritage of Japan.

๐Ÿ“ธ Sharing the Magic ๐Ÿ“ธ

I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed the Onbashira Festival and captured the awe-inspiring moments. The sheer dedication and unity displayed during this event are truly inspiring. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฎ

If you ever have the chance to experience the Onbashira Festival, seize it! It’s a remarkable journey back in time, full of wonder and excitement.
